Curated Care To Keep Horses Comfortable, Calm & Content

Ensuring your horse remains comfortable and well looked after is our top priority. We have designed our services to revolve around the  overall wellbeing and happiness of your horse.

Our Services

Customized Feeding

All our horses are fed 2-3 times daily a customized diet individually in their 12x12 stall.

Custom Diets

Cushings, Insulin Resistance, Laminitis diets – Each horse’s diet is customized to meet their dietary requirements.  If we have any questions or concerns, together we will consult with our local equine nutritionist to determine the optimal feed routine.   We have successfully managed horses with a history of laminitis by limiting their pasture time to the time of day with the lowest grass sugar levels thus allowing the horse the pleasure of grazing at the same time significantly reducing their risk of recurrence.  Grazing muzzles are an option if needed.

Haying

High quality square bales of second and third cutting Orchard Grass, Orchard Grass/Alfalfa or Orchard Grass/Clover Mix are the standard. Horses are fed the hay that best meets their nutritional requirements. Mature first cutting is provided to horses with certain metabolic disorders whose condition requires hay with lower sugar & starches. In the rare instance where high quality hay and grain is not enough to maintain a retired horse’s weight.  We supplement with well soaked Alfalfa cubes and Orchard Grass pellets.

Healthcare

Your retired horse’s health care benefits from preventative care, such as a diet utilizing feeds made with low starch and sugar ingredients, access to manicured pastures for exercise, vaccinations, teeth floating, supplements and medications as needed.

Vaccinations, teeth floating, medications, supplements and farrier visits are paid by owners.

Emergency Care

We live on the farm 24/7 with each of the pastures within view of the residence.  Horses are checked at a minimum of three times daily.  When owners sign our contract, owners provide Walnut Glen Farm with permission to arrange emergency veterinary care if we are unable to contact the owner.

We recommend owners provide us with an emergency contact in case they cannot be reached. We also discuss with an owner their wishes for their horse’s care to help guide us in the event we are unable to reach the horse’s owner.

Veterinary

Regular veterinary services are provided by Dr. Jana Froeling who also provides acupuncture, Chinese herbs and massage therapy for those interested.

Emergency veterinary services are provided by Piedmont Equine Hospital, 10 minutes from our farm.

Equine Dentistry is provided by Ken Pankow.

Farrier is provided by Karl Christopher. Farrier fees paid by horse’s owner. Your horse’s hooves are trimmed every four to six weeks as necessary by our professional farrier. For the safety of our other horses, we cannot accept horses who require rear shoes. Owners are required to establish an account with veterinary practices, dentist and farrier, who will bill owners directly for services provided for your horse.

Medication

Owners are responsible for the cost of all medications.

We will administer daily and long-term care medications at an additional cost.

Deworming – Based on fecal testing, which determines the deworming protocol for each individual horse. Fecals determine which horses in a herd due to their immune system are responsible for shedding of parasites and a deworming and fecal testing program is then set up for each individual horse. Owners are responsible for the cost of the fecal test and each deworming product needed.

Fly Control

Natural fly control, no harmful insecticides. We remove the areas where flies breed, release fly parasites to lay their eggs in fly larvae and use traps for the adult flies. In addition, we use fly masks and fly boots (provided by the owner) daily on a as need basis.

How We Board New Horses

The first step is getting owners to fill our onboarding application form. This helps us understand the nature of care your horse requires, and if we’re a good fit.

Boarding Application

Once your application is reviewed and meets our requirements, we share our boarding agreement with the horse owners to read through, sign and pay necessary fees.

Boarding Agreement

We work with the owners to ship their horses down to us. At this points, liability agreements are signed and we begin care for the horse right away.
